Water is drawn from the surface through discreet rectangular openings called skimmers, which capture floating debris before the water cycles through the primary filtration and heating/chilling systems.

What Is an Overflow Swimming Pool?

An overflow pool operates on a continuous cascade principle. The water level is exactly flush with the surrounding deck or coping. Instead of being drawn through isolated skimmers, the water spills evenly over the perimeter edge into a concealed channel or visible grating system.

Because the water is constantly displacing over the edge, this system requires a secondary subterranean holding tank (a balancing tank) to store the displaced water when bathers enter the pool, ensuring a seamless flow regardless of pool occupancy.

Standard pools have a smaller structural footprint since they do not require a balancing tank, making them more adaptable to constrained outdoor spaces or complicated retrofit scenarios.

Technical Coordination

The construction of an overflow edge demands extreme precision. The structural concrete, waterproofing, and final finishing must be leveled to exact tolerances; even a variance of a few millimeters can disrupt the uniform flow of water over the perimeter.

Skimmer pools, while still requiring rigorous structural and MEP execution, are generally more forgiving in their edge tolerances, resulting in a less complex build process.

Landscape and Villa Integration

Both pool types must integrate flawlessly with surrounding hardscaping and the villa's architectural foundation. Overflow systems often incorporate sophisticated perimeter drainage and bespoke stone grating to conceal the collection channel. Standard pools require careful selection of coping stones to define the pool's boundary securely and aesthetically against the deck.

The increased engineering complexity, precise leveling requirements, and the necessity of a balancing tank generally position overflow pools at a higher investment tier compared to standard skimmer pools of the same dimensions.
